2nd debate: top ten lies and top ten misses

Joel Pollack at Breitbart has Fact Check: Top Ten Worst Lies of the Second Presidential Debate

1. "He did call it an act of terror." The worst untruth told by a moderator in presidential history. Candy Crowley's intervention in favor of Obama caused the president's cheering section to burst into applause, in violation of the rules, and there was little that Romney could say in response. But she was wrong...

2. "He wanted to take them into bankruptcy without providing them any way to stay open." After Obama accused Romney of wanting American auto manufacturers to go bankrupt, Romney pointed out that Obama had, in fact, taken the auto companies through bankruptcy. Obama's retort was to accuse Romney of wanting to take the companies bankrupt in order to put them out of business--a blatant lie.

3. "In what new ways do you intend to rectify the inequalities in the workplace, specifically regarding females making only 72 percent of what their male counterparts earn?" The false premise from a member of the audience was especially egregious because her question had been selected in advance by the moderator. The supposed wage gap between men and women for the same work is largely a myth. As Diana Furchtgott-Roth pointed out: "Women make about 95 percent of what their male counterparts earn, if the male counterparts are in the same job with the same experience."

4. "And the production is up....What you’re saying is just not true." Obama contested a claim by Romney that production of oil and gas is down on federal lands. He even accused Romney of not telling the truth. But Romney was right--exactly right, down to the percentage decline.

5. "You can ship jobs overseas and get tax breaks for it." We have heard the same lie for eight years from Obama. In 2004, he ran for U.S. Senate from Illinois on a promise to end such tax breaks. He did it again when he ran for President of the United States in 2008. And yet he has never done anything about it--because there are no such tax breaks.

6. "They rely on it for mammograms." Obama attacked Romney's proposal to cut off federal funding to Planned Parenthood by claiming that the organization provides mammograms to women to help prevent breast cancer. It's been a repeated claim made by the left for months. The problem is that it's just untrue...

7. "I want to make sure our timekeepers are working here." For the third debate in a row, the Democratic candidate complained that he was not receiving as much time to speak as the Republican. And for the third debate in a row, the Obama/Biden ticket actually spoke for longer--much longer--than the Romney/Ryan ticket...

8. "He called the Arizona law a model for the nation." Obama tried to knock Romney's immigration policy while at the same time accusing him of flip-flopping on the issue. But as Romney pointed out, he was referring specifically to the e-Verify part of the law--the requirement of instant verification of workers' legal status.

9. "...[H]e was asked, is it fair for somebody like you, making $20 million a year, to pay a lower tax rate than a nurse or a bus driver....And he said, yes, I think that’s fair." Obama was referring to Romney's recent 60 Minutes interview. But the transcript reveals Obama was not telling the truth.

10. "I told you I would cut taxes for middle-class families, and I did. I told you I’d cut taxes for small businesses, and I have." President Barack Obama has made this claim repeatedly during the campaign, but it is not true, as even the liberal Huffington Post acknowledges.

Kevin Dujan at Hillbuzz has Ten Important Things You Might Have Missed in the Second Presidential Debate — Hofstra’s Romney vs. Obama Debate on 10/16/2012

1. Obama’s Ministry of Truth is working hard for him, but it is no longer powerful enough to deliver him this election.

2. Town Hall style debates are ridiculous and should be replaced with Lincoln-Douglas style debates in the future.

3. Frank Luntz’s focus groups ran screaming away from Obama after this debate and confidently said they will vote for Romney.

4. There are no McCain 2008 voters who are undecided this year or switching to Obama; the audience last night was only Obama 2008 voters who are now undecided or voting for Romney.

5. Mitt Romney presented himself as presidential to the extent that one woman actually called him “President Romney” last night.

6. Obama’s lies about him not being at war with oil, gas, and coal production will be easily exposed in coming days.

7. Obama’s lie about Benghazi is going to come back to haunt him in a big way.

8. Democrats have given up on Independents and Moderates and are now pushing a solely base-turnout election.

9. Barack Obama appeared to be raging on cocaine last night.

10. CNN’s Candy Crowley is the Helen Jones-Kelley of 2012 (a woman who abused her position in a blatant way to help Obama and should be fired for it).

  1. Hello Lisa,

I am a small government conservative as well, living in the SF Bay Area. I saw your link at Hot Air? Anyway, it caught my eye for two reasons:

    1) It was my dream to move to NZ. I applied for residency at 55, and missed out on the immigration scoreing - my degree (poly sci and econ) did not match my 30 years of job experience (I.T.). Alas, too old to live there as a resident.

2)Now that I am 60, I decided to visit the darn place. I often wondered what it would be like to live in NZ, its lower population and beauty reminding me of the California I grew up in.

So I will be spending three weeks traveling the country. Any particular recommendations?

    Mark

    1. hi Mark, NZ is absolutely beautiful. We love it down here... there is a lot to see and do. Where will you be traveling? You can spend a good week just around Auckland, the largest city of 1.2 million (or so). There is some 3 million across rest of the country. Around Auckland I recommend visiting some beaches. West coast is very dramatic - Piha Beach, Muriwai Beach. Muriwai has observation deck over a Gannet colony. On your way to Piha, stop at the Arataki Visitor center to learn bit more about the area. Auckland's downtown central business district ("CBD") is fun. Dinner at the Sky Tower (or bit of gambling, too?) after visting the observatory. There are dinner cruises or you can take a ferry to Rangitoto (dormant volcano) or Waiheke island - for wine tasting or scooter rental. Kelly Tarlton's is small but fun aquatic spot. The Auckland zoo is lovely. There are helicopter tours of Auckland area. Motat is museum of cars and airplanes. The Auckland Museum is neat with Maori and ANZAC history.

3 hours from Auckland is Lake Taupo and Rotorua: bubbling mud pools, glaciers, natural spas, steam and nature hikes.

From Auckland, you can book 3-5 day tours on little buses - we did one to Rotorua and that was a great way to see the sites, relatively cheap, with a tour guide.

South island is gorgeous - Milford Sound has boat or helicopter tours - even train tours.

So, look online, but hope this gets you started! :) have a great trip...

  2. Lisa- How is my NZ sweetheart transplant?

2- I am getting so sick of this one. Campaign, as well as Liberal bloggers are hanging on to this one for dear life. It was the headline of an article. Read the F##king article! Idiots.

5- I loved the first debate. When Romney looked right at Obama after his comment and said, "You must know something my accountants don't know." That was classic.

6- This one pisses me off. Not only did Romney clarify a fact, but I believe Obama made some point of the man who worked on the law with AZ, also worked, or is working with Romney. Therefore Romney must agree with the plan? Ridiculous! Under that theory, Obama must agree with the banking industry under Bush, and have no problem with it's collapse. Since men like Geithner, Lew, and Gensler has worked, or is working in the O's Administration.

9- To bad this is not a direct question in a debate. I would love for Romney to explain why he pays less in taxes than a nurse, or bus driver. I would then like to see the look on Obama's face when Romney brings up Obama's '08 campaign promise to raise the "Capitol Gains" tax. A promise which was quickly abandoned.

In closing, I saw your vitamin D post. I hope everything is going O.K. physically. Cheers Mate LOLOL

  3. hi J.O.B., things are OK down here, still... :-)

We have new next door neighbors, a lovely young family - kiwi hubby and American wife. Small world when a fellow American moves next door here in NZ, eh?!

I'm doing my Vitamin D every day and last couple weeks have been pretty decent and not too painful... hopefully I'm on the mend...

Can't believe only couple more weeks until potus elections.

I predict a HUGE Romney win, he's definitely taking Ohio... Sad sacks in Illinois will vote for ol' big ears, and perhaps CA and NY... but that might be it. Rest of the country seems rightly fed up with this communist drugged up fake gay potus...

I'm planning a Romney victory party for the day after...

    cheers for now mate ;)

  4. Lisa,

Thanks for the suggestions - wish I'd asked earlier (the bus thing sounds great). I am renting a camper van in Aukland and thinking of driving a circle, down the west coast to the near end of south island, back up the east coast. I have particular interest in 'that art deco town' in Hawkes Bay, Nelson, the wine making areas. I am not really a gambler, but good dinners and a bit of history along with natural sites is neat. Three weeks is a long time but I think there is a lot to see.

In regards to the election - I need to read optomistic folks like you. I tend to worry looking at the numbers and doubt the sanity of Ohio folks. We are very close...but not quite there (and Obama's toxic ads of character slurs are endless in swing states).

The shame of it is that only now are folks are seeing what a great man Romney is (like giving away a great amount of his earnings) and how small, mean, and petty Obama is.

It does not look like Romney is going to focus on Penn. (as he should) as a backstop, and if he'd pour resouces in Wisc I think he could win it. Ohio is stuck because they remember Obama "saved" GM and Chrysler jobs...

Sigh...hopefully trends continue in Romney's favor.

  5. hey M.H., do NOT dispair! Romney WILL win Ohio, he will WIN the presidency and start restoring America...

The MittMentum is WITH him... HillBuzz.org has some great motivational posts last couple weeks, check them out some time...

cheers and have a great time in NZ when you visit... its beautiful down here.
